SUPPORT GROWS FOR ARTS CENTRE IDEA
SUPPORT for proposals to covert Dunfermline Fire Station into a centre for the
contemporary arts is gaining momentum.
Voluntary group Dunfermline Arts and Media (DAM) believe the Art Deco building, which
will be vacated when a new fire station is opened at Pitreavie in the new year, would be an
ideal home for workshops, studios and an exhibition space.
And Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie agrees.
He said, “It’s an excellent suggestion and I would be delighted to offer my support. I think
the fire station would be an ideal home for an arts centre. All the elements seem right. It’s in
a prominent site close to the city centre and would help to meet an unanswered need in the
area for such a facility.
“And I would not like the fire station to become another pub or nightclub ¬- and I think many
people feel the same.”
The arts centre proposal is being considered in a feasibility study commissioned by DAM, who
have asked Tesco – who are to build a massive superstore on the adjacent Thomson’s World
of Furniture site – to give their support.
DAM co-founder Ian Moir said he had written to the retail giants asking them to give their
backing “financially if possible”.
Tesco hope to start work on building the new store within a matter of months.
A spokesman said the company was aware of DAM’s proposals and would be “watching developments
with interest”.
